Fraser, Moreton, Stradbroke and Bribie Island is a unique and beautiful natural environment, but it also presents a range of hazards to visitors. Here are some key tips for staying safe on the Islands:
- Be prepared for the environment: Fraser, Moreton, Bribie and Stradbroke Island(s) has a subtropical climate, and temperatures can vary greatly between day and night. Bring plenty of water, a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent, and pack a first aid kit for emergencies.
- Know the tides: Islands is surrounded by ocean, and tidal movements can have a significant impact on the island’s beaches and creeks. We will supply you with allowed times to travel on beaches (3 hours either side of low tide). Always check the tide times before setting out on a walk or drive, and be aware of rising water levels when near creeks and lagoons.
- Respect wildlife: Fraser Island is home to a range of wildlife, including dingoes, echidnas, and various bird species. Keep a safe distance from wildlife and never feed them, as this can encourage dangerous behavior. Stay close to your children and don’t let then out of your sight. Never turn your back on Dingo’s and do not run away from them. Stand your ground at all times.
- Drive safely: Islands has many off-road tracks and sand roads, which can be challenging to drive on. Always drive at a safe speed, 30kmh on inland tracks and 60 kmh on beaches, respect other road users, and avoid hooning or reckless driving.
- Stay on designated tracks: Islands has a delicate ecosystem, and staying on designated tracks helps to prevent damage to the environment. Leave no trace and always follow the guidelines set by park authorities. Also keep to the rules we will give you at hand over. There are areas on each Island where we will not allow you to drive etc.
- Be mindful of the sun: Islands is located in the tropics, and the sun can be intense. Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
- Watch out for hoarse and sand flies: Sand and horse flies are common on Islands and can be a nuisance. Wear insect repellent and avoid wearing perfumes or fragrances, which can attract flies.
- Be aware of beach safety: Island’s beaches are beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. Do not swim in the ocean on Islands.
- Be prepared for emergencies: Islands are remote locations, and emergency services may be some distance away. Bring a first aid kit and be prepared to assist others in the event of an emergency. Make sure you have number of emergency services available.
- Respect cultural heritage: All Island are a significant cultural heritage site for the aboriginal people, and visitors are encouraged to respect the island’s cultural heritage etc.
