Lightning Strike Fraser Island
A 43-year-old man was hit and killed by the strike while fishing on the beach with his 11-year-old son on Friday night at Inskip Point. Witness Diane Maxwell says the lightning strike sounded like a bomb exploding.
There’d been one crack, sort of off in the distance, which had obviously traveled south and struck down there somewhere. And then suddenly the strike that hit here on the beach – and it just came out of nowhere. There was no expectation that anything was about to happen, it just struck very rapidly. She said
Bev McCormack says the strike sent the boy flying through the air.
There was this huge crack and I spun around and I saw this huge bolt of lightning just come straight down, and it didn’t hit the water, it hit the beach.I saw a little boy fly about 30 metres in the air, over to the side, she said
She says she quickly realized nothing could be done to save the man and rushed to help the child.
I asked him, ‘where’s your mum?’ and he said he didn’t have one, so it’s really sad, she said.
The boy was taken to Nambour Hospital as a precaution.
